&t Quartonian: live performance with Quartz Composer » Blog Archive » Core Image on the new ibook.

I finally got time to test the new ibook model with the Radeon 9550. I loaded up my Quartonian patch, some other Quartz Composer files and the Motion compatibility checker on a USB stick and visited the Apple store in Regent St.
The new ibook is completely core image accelerated. Quartonian ran at a fair clip even on 640×480 clips. Motion compatibility checker said yep this machine is supported.

As far as I can tell the new ibook would be faster in every way than a 12″ powerbook’s anaemic FX5200 which it’s probably why Apple doesn’t make a bid deal about the core image capability as it’s actually quite a lot better than the low end powerbook.
So I guess expect powerbook updates soon? But until then the low end ibook is a very decent machine for VJ’s and as far I can tell it’s the cheapest mac which is fully core image accelerated. (ok there is the emac but lugging that around is not an option…)

Good news for anyone who wants a cheap machine to hack core image or quartz composer patches.
